Violence in schools: an action request Deadly Pattern

The recent shootings in Red Lake, Minn., put another note Violence in the classroom on the map. This tragedy, as well as other profile school shootings such as Columbine High School in Colorado and others in the Tennessee, Oregon and Michigan, clearly show that school violence is not limited by geography or demography.

This pattern raised concerns about the deadly school safety, gun control and the need to address the roots of violence in schools nation.

To raise awareness of school safety and security issues and help make schools safer, the National Crime Prevention Council, better known for his 25-year-old beloved icon, McGruff the Crime Dog, developed the initiative to Be Safe and Sound, in collaboration with the National PTA. This effort of public education, funded by the Allstate Foundation, Assa Abloy Group and the Security Industry Association, mobilizes parents to work with school officials and policy makers to create an environment where students feel safe.

The initiative distributes publications that help parents and others learn the ropes to become involved in issues of school safety. His "A Caregiver's Guide to School Safety and Security", for example, specifies the measures they can take to help improving school safety and includes an overview of safety guidelines.

Another resource useful is the "School Safety and Security Toolkit: A guide for parents, schools and communities." This guide provides parents and community members the tools they need to work with school administrators and policymakers to evaluate the safety and security of schools and plan improvement.

"Until we have put school safety at the top of the EU agenda in our schools – and our children – continue to be vulnerable, "said Alfonso E. Lenhardt, President and CEO National Crime Prevention Council.
