How do I make a 48″ sock monkey?

Hey everyone. I found the perfect Christmas gift for a friend of mine. A giant sock monkey! Brilliant, I know. But the cheapest one I could find is $79. I really want to make one for him. Does anyone know how I can do that? I could get a pattern book, but I wouldn’t even know where to start to get fabric. please help! thanks.

48″ is HUGE!!
All the patterns I’ve found are for smaller monkeys – because they use socks to make them, not fabric.

I also found patterns for knitting and crocheting sock monkeys, but nothing anywhere near as big as you want to do.
