Six Spools
Inline Six biturbo in bmw?

My friend’s brother has a 535i and has went through 3 fuel pumps. He took it to the dealer and the dealer told him it was because of the turbo. I know a little about cars, but not really about bmw’s. My friend told me the turbo only comes on in manual mode. Which is the cause of the problem, the dealer mechanic told him he was shifting to early in manual mode. This is hard to believe because turbos should be spooling even if it is in automatic, which why else would you have a turbo in the first place. I know the turbo runs all the time, and its not even related to the fuel pump. If bmw has a weird design, that causes this I would like to know please. Thank you in advance.

You’re right: Fuel pump reliability is essentially unrelated to turbo operation (except that if you really use the performance of the car you’ll be using a lot of gas!) BMW has been having fuel pump issues with these cars (just as they did with sender units in the the earlier E36 3-series and Z3 cars). It’s a BMW issue that they’re presumably working with their fuel pump supplier to fix.

Your friend is wrong about the operation of the turbos, and the dealer is BS’ing your friend, plain and simple.

There were a couple of revisions to the computer software on these cars, designed to reduce the operation of the wastegates, which was apparently perceived as noisy, but had the side effect of reducing low-end performance (meaning the car would not be on boost so strongly at lower RPM’s). The latest software revisions apparently have restored the missing performance.
