Mccalls Simplicity
I want to try my hand at making clothes?

and i was wondering if any of the store bought patterns (mccalls, simplicity, etc) were easier to use. i know that the ones i have looked at actually have patterns on different difficulty levels, but thought maybe some brands were easier for a beginner to use. Thanks so much.

Couple tips:

1. Go with the McCall’s, Simplicity, and Butterick patterns designated as “very easy” and/or that you can “make in one hour.” Don’t try Vogue — their “Very Easy” patterns are not meant for beginners.

2. I would try elastic waist or drawstring shorts or pajama bottoms as your first project. Pick a pattern that asks for NON-stretch fabric like broadcloth, poplin, or denim. Choose a solid, a small to medium print, or stipes. Don’t choose a plaid or a large print — there is a special way that these have to be cut out, or they look funny.

3. Really important: Pattern Sizes are NOT the same size as store-bought clothes sizes. Your pattern size will probably be two or more sizes bigger than the size you buy from the store. You will need to take your measurements and then look at the size chart on the pattern.

Good luck!
