Kit Blocks

How do blocks work on a lowering kit? Please explain.?
Looking at some reduction kits that include lowering blocks. What are they? How do they work? Are they worth it?
The blocks are usually used between the axle and leaf springs for cars. The axle is mounted on springs to put a block between the lowered position of the car by the height of the block. Longer U-bolts are delivered with lowering block kits to accommodate the space taken by the blocks. It is a mod of the old school.
