What is the best way to escape from a locked closet?

It’s locked from the outside. The skeleton key is still in it. There is a clothes rod from one side of the closet to the other, but no hangers. There is one shelf, close to the top of the closet, also the outline of a square at the very top. No lap top, phone, chair, nothing.

Take the clothes rod off and use it to poke a hole in the sheetrock on the ceiling of the closet. Then pull enough sheetrock down to fit through. Hoist yourself up on the shelf -use the rod as a climbing pole if you need to. Then exit through the attic and climb back out or fall out to another room.
