My upper thread will knot not over with the Netherlands to form a mesh. How do I solve this problem?

I'm to sew on a Sewing Machine with a knit with a 80/120 ball needle, cotton thread and100%. The upper thread will not bow with the wire Down to form a mesh. Sometimes the mesh is irregular, sometimes the upper thread will not sew at all. I tried to sew with cotton canvas instead of knitting, and everything works fine. So it must have something to do with the fabric. How do I solve this problem?
